Everything you need to think about before you decide to landscape
So, you have been considering landscaping your property? There is a lot to consider before you begin, and it can be pretty overwhelming if you never completed a landscaping project before.
We often hear stories of people who are unhappy with the end result, purely because they didn’t give it enough thought at the beginning. To help you, the experts at Countrywide Landscaping have put together a list of the top 5 things, they believe you need to consider before you begin your landscaping project:
Step 1- Evaluate the area
OK, let’s start with the basics, you need to measure your area and note any slopes or peaks within it. These may cause some trouble later. Then you want to test the soil for moisture, this will allow you to plant to meet water needs.
Spend some time analyse the sun and what time it provides shade or sunlight. This will be a big help when deciding where to place seating areas and certain plants. Wind is another factor you will need to think about, this allows you to strategically place trees or large bushes for example you may wish to wind and supply shelter.
Different plants thrive in different soil types so find out what you are working with ideally you want your soil to be 40% sand, 40% silt and 20% clay. A good way to test the makeup of your soil is to get a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid, 1 tea spoon of washing powder a ruler and a soil sample.
Sift the soil to remove larger stones, into the glass jar until the jar is half full. Then, add a teaspoon of washing powder, fill the remainder of the jar with water. Close the jar tightly and shake it for 1-2 minutes. The washing powder acts surfactant which will keep all the particles separate. Place the jar on a level surface and all leave it to settle.
Step 2- Wants Vs Needs
Think about how the landscape will be used? Play area for the kids, do you have pets, do you have plans for a swimming pool and so on.
We all want the most amazing landscape but, what will your budget allow for. Make a list of needs and wants. The needs will be top priority after that, see what is left in your budget to play around with. Keep the future in mind, your lifestyle may change dramatically in the next of 5 years, make sure you factor that in.
Step 3- Environment
Consider the climate and your soil type. By placing your plants strategically, you can alter your landscape conditions. Temperature, light and wind can be altered by the trees and plants you choose.
By choosing resources such as efficient plants and consciously managing water you will help protect and preserve your environment. Look for plants that require less water, fertilizer and pesticides.
Installing rain water catchment systems, reusing construction materials that may have been torn down during demolition and using nontoxic stains, paints and cleaners are some other ways you can do your bit for the environment.
Step 4- Style/ Design Themes
You will need to consider the style of your home, after all you garden is an extension of your home. Having a theme in mind can steer you in the right direction and help you to decide where to put plants, decorations and any structures you plan on incorporating in your landscape.
Are you going for geometric shapes and bold colours or something a bit softer and neutral? Pinterest is the best tool for inspiration!
Step 5- What lies beneath
What’s under your landscape area? Are you sure you aren’t about to disrupt or damage any services running through it? When digging, you are at risk of causing damage that can end up being very expensive to repair. Get your hands on some plans and avoid making any costly mistakes.
Do you still feel confident about taking on the landscaping job yourself or does it all sound a bit too hard? It can certainly involve a lot of hard work, especially if you’re not sure what you are doing.
